Halewood Wines & Spirits Distillery in Huyton today hosted racing driver, Declan Jones, ahead of this weekend’s round of the British Touring Cars Championship.

22 year old Declan, who lives in Halewood, is sponsored by the Halewood brand ‘Whitley Neill Gin’ and arrived on site this morning in his Ginetta G55 car ahead of the third round race of the Ginetta GT4 Supercup at Oulton Park this weekend.

Struggling to find sponsorship, Declan missed out on testing sessions throughout the winter until Halewood Distillery stepped in.

Declan, who has been testing this week at Donington Park, said:

“Most of the competitors in my category were able to take full advantage of training throughout the winter months so I was on the back foot a little. I’m so grateful to have secured the sponsorship and I’m currently second in the overall competition. This weekend is the 3rd out of 8 rounds that take place between now and September.

“My ultimate aim is to take part in endurance racing; Le Mans in France would be the pinnacle for me. There’s a championship called WEC (World Endurance Championship) and that’s what I’m aiming for. This championship is a progression towards that.”

Stewart Hainsworth, Group CEO of Halewood Wines & Spirits, said:

“Declan was known to the Halewood family so when I heard about the difficulty he was having to find a brand sponsor, I was immediately interested. He’s a very talented driver but he’s also a local lad. We wanted to make sure he had the opportunity to compete and we’ve been able to combine that with communicating our Whitley Neill Gin brand.”

The car is believed to travel up to around 140mph, taking corners at around 50mph. TV viewers can catch Declan’s race this Sunday afternoon live from 4pm on ITV4.
