Last night was the VIP launch of Cineworld Speke ahead of the official opening tomorrow (Friday 10th August). I managed to catch up with Operations Director Mark Whitty and General Manager Andrew Starkie as they welcomed guests to see the magnificent new complex we’ve all keenly watched rising from the ground during the past year or so.

What factors helped the company decide to build this new Cineworld at Mersey Retail Park and how long did the project take from decision to opening?

A gap in the market was identified and when the developers came to us with their proposal, we could immediately see the opportunity. It’s taken several years to work through legal agreements, develop plans and build so it’s exciting to see it come to fruition tonight ahead of the official opening on Friday.

How many local jobs have been created?

60 jobs have been created across the team.

How many screens are there and what films can people look forward to seeing over the rest of the summer?

There are eleven screens; one is a Superscreen and one ScreenX.

There’s plenty of films to choose from such as Ant Man & The Wasp, Incredibles 2, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! Mission: Impossible – Fallout and The Meg which we’re showing to our guests this evening.

During the school summer holidays, we’ll also be showing a Junior Movie daily around 10am at a discount price (around £3).

So what exactly is a Superscreen and ScreenX?

The new Superscreen includes a wall to wall, floor-ceiling high screen. There’s also dual projection and multidimensional sound with Dolby Atmos, powered by 27 amplifiers.

ScreenX is the world’s first multi-projection immersive cinema auditorium which provides a 270-degree viewing experience. The technology goes beyond the frame of a traditional screen by expanding the film scenes onto the side walls.

Can you pre-book online?

Yes, just visit www.Cineworld.co.uk and select Speke. You’ll see a list of films and can find out all the prices.

Are there any loyalty schemes available?

Yes, ‘Unlimited Cinema’ costs £17.90 per month and entitles you to watch all the films you want. With this, you also receive 10% off food and drinks which increases to 25% off after 12 months.

People can also opt for a Cineworld Plus Account which costs £4.95 for the year and entitles you to 10% discount on online tickets for 12 months as well as £6 of complimentary food and drinks discount vouchers to redeem at Cineworld.

Our chat draws to a close and guests are treated to an advance viewing of The Meg on the new Superscreen. It doesn’t disappoint as the audience become immersed in the film whilst munching on popcorn in the extremely comfortable chairs!
