Four members of Liverpool’s North West Spirit Taekwondo team recently brought back ten medals – and several international titles – to the city after competing in the Open European Taekwondo Championships in Woking. It was a tough tournament, with a very high standard of competition; but the Liverpool fighters rose to the challenge and returned with 6 gold, 2 silver & 2 bronze medals.
13-year-old black belt Callum Edwards gave an impressive performance, achieving a hat-trick of gold medals after taking the top spot in sparring, patterns and team sparring events. He dominated each bout with an onslaught of head kicks, leaving no doubt in the umpires’ minds that he deserved to be crowned European Champion.
8-year-old teammates Kaden Springer and Owen Gargan gave solid performances at their first international tournament, fighting hard to take silver medals in their sparring divisions. Owen also demonstrated a high standard of technical ability to earn a bronze medal in patterns; and he later added a gold medal to his collection after winning the jumping high kick event.
36-year-old Stef Davies had tough opposition in the ladies’ black belt events, particularly in the patterns division where she achieved a bronze medal. She put up a determined fight in the sparring event to take the gold medal, and added a second gold medal after a surprise win in the jumping high kick event.
The team is now back in training, working towards further success at upcoming tournaments.
